Full Description
7 April 2006. Field Survey.
Four earthworks along the south edge of Bylaugh or Commission Wood were investigated. These may be described from east to west as follows:
A. Slight mound with semi-circular ditch and slight external bank, with a straight ditch and bank on the south side, making it D-shaped. Is this a Bronze Age barrow, the south side of which has been truncated and is now overlain by an old wood boundary bank?
B. A slight ditch and external flinty bank that starts off semi-circular to the east, but which becomes less regular and more sinuous to the west.
C. A semi-circular ditch and external flinty bank, similar to A.
D. A semi-circular or half-oval ditch and external flinty bank. Much larger than the other features.
It appears that these earthworks have all likely been truncated on their south sides by the field, and the D-shape of 'A' might result from an earlier wood boundary slightly further north than the existing one. They all appear to be ancient, and some of the banks have the stumps of old trees on them, certainly pre-dating the 20th century plantings. All of the banks contained numerous flints.
