Full Description
Site of the Bale Oak. An large and prominent oak tree of debated age, cut down for safety reasons in 1860. The 1995 MARS survey suggested the tree was 1000 years old and 36 feet in circumference, predating the nearby All Saint's church. (S1) ascribes the tree an age of 500 years and reports the centre was hollow and utilisied as cobbler's shop until it was cut down in 1860.
E. Rose (NLA), 22 July 2006. Amended by E. McDonald (HES), 8 March 2021.
January 2011.
There is a sign suggesting that the small grove of Holm oaks now on the site is owned by the National Trust.
D. Gurney (HES), 21 January 2011.
