Map

Norfolk NMP.
A fragmented section of earthwork bank can just about be seen as an earthwork between TF 8544 4528 and TF 8697 4502 on 1946 aerial photographs (S1). It runs alongside a ditch which appears to be a drainage ditch, connected with land reclamation. It is thus possible that the banks are no more than mounds of spoil from drain clearance. However, a dashed line on the 1825 Enclosure Map (S2) suggests that there was some kind of feature running along the same course at this date. No earthwork feature is shown on the 1906 Ordnance Survey map (S3), with the banks just following the line between the salt marshes and Overy marshes. It is therefore possible that these banks may have been part of the sea defences, possibly following an earlier feature. However, it is also possible that they could be no more than accumulations of spoil from modern drainage clearance.
A. Hunt (Suffolk CC), 31 January 2001.
