Map

January 2001. Norfolk NMP.
A sinuous, linear bank feature, running for over 2km between TF 8447 4435 and TF 8578 4568, can be seen as an earthwork on 1946 aerial photographs (S1). It forms a boundary between the coastal saltmarsh and areas of cultivation or reclaimed land. 1972 aerial photographs (S2-S3) also clearly show the earthwork feature. Some kind of feature is depicted on the 1825 Enclosure Map (S4) running along the same course as the bank. It is not clearly shown as an earthwork, but it does suggest that there was some similar feature prior to the bank. The feature is shown as an earthwork on the 1906 Ordnance Survey map (S5). The bank is probably part of the sea defences in this area, to protect the reclaimed land, and is likely to be a continuation of site 36028. The feature would appear to be post medieval and may have had a precursor.
A. Hunt (Suffolk CC), 31 January 2001.
