Map

November 2002 - January 2003. Geophysical and fieldwalking survey. Bacton to King's Lynn pipeline plot 144.
A number of weak linear anomalies were detected by the geophysical survey and could represent former field boundaries. Former field boundaries shown on the 1838 tithe map and 1885 ordnance survey map may correspond with the linear anomalies. Fieldwalking recovered a scraper, core, bladelet and two flakes, two medieval pottery sherds, two post-medieval pottery sherds, and 16 post-medieval ceramic building material fragments.

March - August 2003. Excavation. Bacton to King's Lynn Transco pipeline. Construction section 24, plot number 144.
Excavation revealed Iron Age features, the majority of which had been heavily truncated by Roman activity and more recent agricultural practices. However, a substantial circular ditch, with an associated cluster of post holes, a field boundary or enclosure ditch and four pits were identified.
A series of narrow linear gullies which may have formed an enclosure of a field system has been tentatively dated to the Roman period. A Roman pottery kiln or drying oven set within a system of ditches which may have formed a series of enclosures. A significant number of Roman pits located around the stokehole of a furnace, archaeomagnetic dating indicates its last firing was between 170 and 230 AD.
Two possible Saxon sunken featured buildings, and a medieval or post medieval ditch, were also revealed.
