Summary

Excavation in 2003 revealed multi-period finds and features including a possible Late Iron Age to Early Roman rectangular enclosure containing a scatter of pits and postholes, with a possible well or watering hole outside, suggesting it was settlement related, and two medieval oval hilltop enclosures. A dispersed scatter of small undated pits, each containing a large quantity of burnt flint was also recorded.

Map

November 2002 - January 2003. Geophysical, metal detecting and fieldwalking survey. Bacton to King's Lynn Transco pipeline. Construction section 25, plot number 138.
A significant concentration of medieval pottery was identified at the eastern end of the plot during fieldwalking survey.
In addition, the geophysical survey clearly showed a substantial oval enclosure, as well as a number of other linear anomalies in the same area.
See (S1) and (S2).
S. Howard (NLA), 5 February 2010.

March - August 2003. Excavation. Site 25 plot 138.
Excavation revealed a dispersed scatter of small undated pits lay either side of a post medieval ditch dividing plot 138 (NHER 37624) from plot 136 (NHER 37625). The majority had strikingly similar fills, and they each contained a large quantity of burnt flint.
A substantial ?Late Iron Age to Early Roman rectangular enclosure containing a scatter of pits and postholes, as well as a possible well or watering hole outside, suggests that it was essentially settlement related. A rectilinear feature at the centre of the enclosure was on a strikingly different alignment.
A large, irregular pit group produced quantiities of Iron Age or Saxon pottery.
Two medieval oval hilltop enclosures, one defined by a fairly insubstantial ditch, the second appeared to be a remodelling with far more substantial ditches. A dense cluster of post holes was probably the remains of a structure within the enclosure.
See (S3).
Also a post-medieval field boundary, field drains and the remains of a probable hedgerow.
