Summary

Excavation in 2003 revealed features including a probable metal working furnace or smelting hearth and six post holes, probably forming a simple structure. It is likely that they are of Iron Age or Saxon date but the lack of dateable artefacts makes this difficult to determine.

Map

March - August 2003. Excavation. Bacton to King's Lynn Transco pipeline. Construction section 43, plot number 58.
Excavation revealed a probable metal working furnace or smelting hearth and six post holes that probably formed a simple structure that were situated some distance apart. They were linked by the quantities of metal working waste within their fills.
A beam slot was situated over the structure, and may have been connected with the furnace or smelting hearth. A scatter of pits was clustered around the beam slot.
The above features have been recorded as Iron Age or Saxon but the lack of dateable artefacts makes this difficult to determine.
Also a post medieval boundary ditch.
