Summary

This post-medieval timber-framed barn is clad in corrugated iron. The steep gable-ended roof is also clad in corrugated iron. The timber frame is largely of re-used timber from a 16th or 17th century building. It has tension braces, ridge purlin, through tenoned side purlins and clasped purlin to upper collars. It has a projecting lean-to entrance bay at the centre built of clay lump. A building survey in November 2010 revealed that the barn is likely to date from 1800 rather than the 17th century.

Level 2 survey of barn prior to proposed conversion.
The barn is a traditional oak-framed threshing barn comprising five bays aligned east to west with a central entrance facing south towards the farmhouse. An enclosed yard is shown on the 1822 enclosure map. The roof is steeply pitched but the original thatch has been replaced by corrugated iron. The roof structure consist of an upper tier of clasped-purlins ith a lower tier of staggered butt-purlins secured by through-tenons and a ridge board which is an original feature. The original suggestion in the grade II listing that the barn is 17th century appears to be incorrect and it is likely that the barn dates to around 1800. The barn is a rare for this period as it retains its original roof structures including a full complement of arch-braces to their tie-beams. The 16th century timber frame is secondhand and may have been salvaged from an earlier barn with an integral stable.
