Summary

This public house is dated to 1694 by a stone set into the fabric at first floor level. It is made from flint, ashlar and brick, with the re-used ashlar blocks laid in chequer patterns. The gabled roof has a central chimneystack and is covered in pantiles. Inside, the west ground-floor room has a sunk-quadrant moulded bridging beam and the east room contains a rebuilt corner fireplace.

Listing Description Excerpt:
"Public house. Dated 1694. Flint, ashlar and brick, the re-used ashlar blocks laid in chequer patterns. Pantiled roofs. Two storeys in three bays. Plinth course with moulded red brick coping. Moulded red brick also at platband between floors."

13 December 1983. Field Observation.
Dolphin Inn. T-shaped, two storey façade to road. Contains much reused stone blocks, otherwise flint and brick. Brick string course between floors. Huge date figures 1694 in stone on upper level of façade. Windows modern. 1971 listing states some olf beams inside but extensively modernised.

April 1996.
Restoration work is to be undertaken. Repairs to the exterior will include insertion of ties to correct bowing and cracking in the west gable end, replacement of loose brick and stonework, blocking a doorway in the front elevation, replacing the render on the eastern gable end, removal of a small disused chimney stack which was a later addition to the building, and removal of the rear chimney stack in order to repair the large single-storey rear extension. Alterations to the interior will include removal of a 1970's partition, alterations to the eastern 1 and a half storey extension, reinforcement of timber beams, and removal and replacement of a modern staircase.
