Summary

An early 18th-entury brick hotel much extended and altered in the 19th century. It is a large three-storey building of five bays and stands at the south-west corner of the Tuesday Market Place.

Before 1945. Casual find.
A mummified cat was found at the Globe Hotel and given to the Red Cat Hotel at North Wootton around 1945. Such items were still being included in buildings as late as the 18th century, at which date the rationalist excuse was used that it frightened away mice.

December 1951. Listed Grade II.
Listing Description Excerpt:
"Early 18th century, much extended and altered 19th-century, very much altered internally 1960s. Rumoured to be to designed by Henry Bell, but this is not convincing. Rendered and colourwashed brick. Various roof coverings: plaintiles to King Street and Ferry Lane fronts, slate to rear, artificial slate to internal courtyard roofs. "

The 19th-century rear wing of the building was gutted by fire.

January 2009.
The hotel is now a pub. Retrospective application for planning permission for an extension of an area of timber decking to the beer garden recieved. See (S5) and (S6)
