Summary

A late 19th-century town hall designed by George Skipper. The brick building has a central pedimented bay containing an image of a sailing ship.

Listing Description excerpt:
"1890 by George Skipper. Brick with painted front. Tiled roof with gabled ends. Two storeys. Five bays wide centre bay projects again with pediment with tympanum containing scene with sailing ship. Moulded eaves cornice with dentils. First-floor brick pilasters fluted and rusticated...Ground floor central three-centred arch doorway with voussoirs and small rectangular sashes with drip moulds over. Between 1st and ground floor rectangular moulded panels containing shields and cartouche at centre over doorway, containing inscription 'Town Hall 1890'. Moulded string courses and plinth. Brick chimney stacks over gable ends with cornices...Long range behind, plain brick with buttressed walls and brick dentil eaves."

The location of this record has been corrected. It was previously mapped as a point at TG 2174 4218 due to an erroneous grid reference associated with (S1) (now corrected).
