Survey undertaken as part of the North Walsham High Street Heritage Action Zone project in order to inform and support future planning and improvement decisions.
Originally one house, 26-27 Market Place is now split into two commercial premises. The roof of the main, north-to-south aligned range consists of six principal rafter and collar trusses, between which are common rafters and butt purlins. At ground-floor level within the main, primary range are some large chamfered ceiling beams. Three main ceiling beams are also visible at first-floor level within this range. Two other ground-floor ceiling beams are located towards the rear of the building and timbers of the cellar ceiling frame are visible beneath both properties.
Analysis of samples from 32 oak timbers and one elm timber in the roof and ceiling frames resulted in the successful dating of 24 timbers. The ceiling frame in the cellar contains timbers felled in or around the winter of AD 1599/1600, the ground-floor ceiling utilises timber felled in or around the winter of AD 1597/1598, and a first-floor ceiling beam has a felling date within the range of AD 1595-1620. The majority of the roof timber appears to have been felled between AD 1598 and AD 1623, with a number felled in the winter of AD 1639/1640 likely to represent later modifications. Although it was not possible to establish absolute felling dates for the first floor ceiling beam or the earlier roof timbers it is possible that these structures also utilised timber felled at the very end of the 16th century.
