English Heritage Listing:
Hill House, Hill House Road. Norwich.
House. Around 1840 extended in late 19th century. Flemish bond gault brick with stuccoed plinth and entablature with cornice and blocking course. Concrete tile and slate hipped roofs. Gault brick axial stacks.
Plan: Square double-depth plan. Front room on either side of central entrance hall which leads to an antechamber and a large room across the back of the house. A small winder staircase rises from the left side of the hall. The late 19th century service wing on the left (southeast) largely replaces earlier services.
Exterior: two storeys. Three-bay northeast front twelve-pane sashes on first floor and tall fifteen-pane sashes on ground floor with cills at floor level and with gauged brick flat arches. Central doorway with stuccoed architrave and cornice on console brackets with raised panel above; rectangular overlight with glazing bars and panelled door. One-bay three-storey late 19th century extension on left with smaller twelve-pane sashes. Similar right hand (northwest) and rear (southwest) elevations, the northwest with large fifteen-pane sash in central architrave like that of front doorway and southwest without central feature but with fourth bay slightly set back on right with later ground floor bay window.
Interior: Much of the original joinery survives including panelled doors with moulded architraves and carved comer blocks and panelled window shutters. Moulded plaster ceiling cornices, niche in hall and small winder staircase with moulded mahogany handrail wreathed around balustrade at top. White marble chimneypiece.
