1989. Stray Find.
During 1989 the cottage was renovated [1]. The owner had been warned to look out for unusual artefacts and as a result a number of objects were recovered during the removal of clay lumps and other demolition works. These finds included a 'mule-type' slipper, a copper farthing of Charles II (1674), a George III halfpenny, an iron door hinge and a small tapered wooden pirn (a weaving implement). During subsequent building work a gap behind an overhead beam was found to contain several additonal objects, including a child's leather shoe, a horn-handled iron knife, an iron 'piercing' tool, a brass disc and a brass weight. A 'witch bottle' was also recovered from a cavity behind one of the fireplaces. A few small iron nails were the only identifiable objects within the bottle.
See (S2) for further details. See also notes and copies of photographs (S3) and (S4) in file.
