Summary

This milestone dates to the late 18th century and is of limestone. It is wedgeshaped with a rounded cap and is inscribed on several sides with SWARDESTON, NORWICH/4/MILES and NEW BUCKENHAM/ll/MILES. This road became a turnpike in 1772 and was disturnpiked in 1870.

Listing Description Excerpt:
"Milestone, late 18th century, limestone. Wedgeshaped with rounded cap, lm high, tapering from 12 to 30cm. Narrow edge inscribed SWARDESTON; recessed full width panels inscribed NORWICH/4/MILES and NEW BUCKENHAM/ll/MILES. Above each panel a small square indent with rivet. The road was turnpiked in 1772."

Milestone marking Norwich 5 miles and New Buckenham 10 miles and also incorporating an OS benchmark. One of 14 surviving milestones along the former Norwich - New Buckenham turnpike. It was created in 1772 and ran from Ber Street Gates in Norwich to New Buckenham. It lasted for 98 years and was disturnpiked in 1870.

There are two types of milestone along this route but both types are wedge-shaped and contain incised lettering in a slightly indented panel. This type of milestone doesn't have the distance to London inscribed on them
