NHER 44997 (Monument record) - Cropmarks of undated linear ditches and enclosures

Cropmarks of undated linear ditches and possible incomplete enclosures or structures are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). These cropmarks are centred on TM 3646 9340. Two C-shaped rectilinear cropmarks are present. These are located either side of a square enclosure cropmark that has been interpreted as a possible Roman temple, Iron Age square barrow or medieval moat (NHER 25647). The northeastern cropmark is located at TM 3645 9337 and measures 9m by at least 5m in plan. The second enclosure has a more curved C-shape plan. It is located to the southeast of the possible temple cropmark at TM 3650 9333 and measures 10m by at least 5m. It is possible that these cropmarks relate to incomplete enclosures or structures of unknown date and function. They may be related to the complete square enclosure, but as they lie on a different alignment this is also uncertain. Two linear ditch cropmarks are also present in the north and south of this group. Although the northern ditch lies parallel to the modern road, neither of these cropmarks relate to field boundaries marked on the 1839 Kirby Cane tithe map (S4) or later maps.
