Full Description
September 2006. Norfolk NMP
Cropmarks of linear ditches, possibly forming part of an enclosure of Roman date, are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These cropmarks were previously recorded as part of NHER 11775. Eleven sections of linear ditch cropmark are present on a variety of different alignments. Double ditches are present up to 215m apart on the northwest and southeast sides of the group. These ditches have similar, but not quite parallel, roughly southwest to northeast alignments. They double ditches are spaced up to 8m apart and extend for up to 138m. Linear ditches extend on a perpendicular alignment between the double ditches possibly forming part of an incomplete enclosure. The double perimeter ditch of this possible enclosure makes it superficially similar to Roman sites in the vicinity (NHER 1659, 1661). It is possible that these cropmarks relate to an incomplete Roman enclosure with a trapezoidal plan and internal dimensions of 215m by at least 145m. Alternatively it is possible that the double ditches are trackways of unknown date. Undated linear ditch cropmarks, possibly relating to drainage, are visible within the enclosure.
