Summary

A possible area of former peat or clay extraction, presumably of post-Roman date, is visible as cropmarks and slight earthworks on aerial photographs. The relatively limited areas of wetter, lower ground are rather poorly defined, but several straight edges are evident suggesting that they are man-made features. They are comparable to more extensive areas of former extraction identified elsewhere, as in the area surrounding Heigham Holmes (e.g. NHER 27280). Both peat and clay are present in this part of the Thurne Valley, and the site could represent the extraction of either material. If the site represents a group of former peat cuttings, it is likely to date to the medieval period.

Map

September 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A possible area of former peat or clay extraction is visible as cropmarks and slight earthworks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 4048 1766. Both peat and clay are present in this part of the Thurne Valley (see Williamson 1997 (S3), for example), and the site could reflect the extraction of either material. If it represents a former peat cutting, it is presumably of medieval date. Alternatively, the mapped features could instead be natural or agricultural in origin. Whether any earthworks still survive at the site is not known.
