Summary

The possible site of a medieval or post medieval post mill is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. The cross-shaped mark is faint and its archaeological origin is uncertain. If it does represent a genuine site, then its relationship with the probable barrow cemetery (NHER 44950) that surrounds it may be significant. It is possible that an additional, as yet unidentified barrow was utilised as a mill mound.

Map

September 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmark of a cross-shaped negative feature is visible on an aerial photograph (S1), centred at TG 4229 1636. It could mark the site of a medieval or post medieval post mill. No evidence of a mound is visible, but the site lies on the northern edge of a probable Bronze Age round barrow cemetery (NHER 44950) and it could have utilised an as yet unidentified barrow. At the same time, the cropmark is only visible on one aerial photograph, it is very faint, and consequently its archaeological origin is far from certain.
