Full Description
October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A possible area of former peat or clay extraction is visible as vegetation marks and perhaps slight earthworks on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 4236 1824. It could represent a former peat cutting, in which case it is presumably of medieval date. There is little peat, however, in this part of the Thurne Valley (see Williamson 1997 (S2), for example), whereas the adjacent parish of Martham possessed numerous clay pits and brickyards in the post medieval period, as described in (S3). Alternatively, the mapped features could instead be of natural or recent agricultural origin. The site may encompass a number of smaller pits (not mapped) similar to those identified 630m to the east (NHER 45112).
S. Tremlett (NMP), 23 October 2006.
