Summary

Two trackways and/or field boundaries, both probably dating to the post medieval period, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The easternmost is crossed by and appears to pre-date the former Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway (NHER 13581). The westernmost could have been associated with the railway itself.

Map

October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Two trackways or double ditched boundaries are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 4251 1816. Their date is not known. The easternmost appears to be overlain by (and therefore pre-dates) the former Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway (NHER 13581; now entirely removed). Its alignment is parallel to a field boundary 100m to the east depicted on the parish Tithe Map (S4). This suggests that it too is of post medieval date, and may have acted as a field boundary as well as a trackway. The second trackway, which lies to the west and is more substantial and curvilinear, appears to approach the southwest side of the railway line (see the Ordnance Survey 2nd edition 25 inch map (S5)) and may have been associated with its construction or use. While a post medieval date is therefore plausible for both features, and there is no evidence that either dates to an earlier phase of activity, the possibility that they are instead of modern origin cannot be ruled out.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 23 October 2006.
