Summary

Linear and curvilinear banks and ditches, comprising one or more trackways and what are probably parts of enclosures and field boundaries, are visible as cropmarks and soilmarks on aerial photographs. They are undated but in general they fit the pattern of enclosure depicted on 19th century maps, such as the parish Tithe Map, and a post medieval date for the site seems plausible.

Map

October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks described below were previously recorded as part of NHER 30632.

A group of linear and curvilinear features is visible as cropmarks and soilmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S4), centred at TG 4161 1726. The majority are ditches but the group includes a substantial linear bank or track. They probably represent fragments of trackways, enclosures and field boundaries. They are undated; there is no known connection between the cropmarks and a medieval seal matrix recovered from the site (NHER 30632). In general, however, the cropmarks conform to the pattern of enclosure depicted on historic maps, such as the parish Tithe Map of 1839 (S5), and this suggests a post medieval date for the site. At the same time, however, some elements could be of relatively recent origin (perhaps marking the line of modern drains, for example) while others could have earlier origins: a long narrow field depicted on the Tithe Map may be a former medieval strip field. The archaeological origin of a curvilinear ‘enclosure’ visible at TG 4154 1723 is doubtful.
