An archaeological evaluation which was undertaken in 2006 revealed a Roman roadway as well as pits and ditches. Finds include Roman coins, pottery and glass sherds. Evidence of a sunken featured building was also recorded. Further evaluation work, in the form of window sampling, undertaken in 2007 recorded a soil horizon of possible Romano-British date, as well as evidence for post medieval landscaping.

Map

October 2006. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site of proposed hotel extension. Trenches 1-5. Contexts 1-75.
Cut features which may be attributed to the late Roman period include pits and ditches, along with a wheel-rutted roadway. A layer of Romano-British 'bioturbated subsoil' was also recognised in all five trenches.
Three 4th century coins were found, one of which was recovered from a soil layer which appeared to have formed above the abandoned roadway.
Other finds include Roman pottery and glass sherds, some of which was recovered from a feature described as a sunken featured building, which may or may not date to the Roman period.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).

March 2007. Borehole Survey.
Window sampling evaluation of site of proposed hotel conservatory extension. Contexts 100-130.
All ten window samples indicate that post medieval to Victorian landscaping had taken place throughout the survey area.
Six of these samples also contained a disturbed layer of subsoil characterised as Romano-British 'bioturbated subsoil', which contained Romano-British pottery dated to the 1st to 4th centuries AD.
