Summary

An undated trackway and/or boundary is visible as cropmarks, soilmarks and perhaps slight earthworks on aerial photographs. It cuts across a number of 19th and 20th century field boundaries and a road, suggesting that it pre-dates the post medieval pattern of enclosure and transport links. Notably, its orientation is the same as a number of fragments of trackway visible to the northeast. Parts of these were in use in the late 18th and 19th century, but an origin in the later prehistoric period has been suggested for them (see NHER 44897 and 44898). Less substantial banks and ditches visible at the northeast end of the feature may be contemporary but more minor boundaries.

Map

October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
An undated trackway and/or boundary is visible as cropmarks, soilmarks and perhaps slight earthworks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3). The site consists of an alignment of bank and ditch fragments visible between TG 4141 1494 and TG 4183 1528. Its northeast-to-southwest alignment is similar to that of various sections of a different trackway visible to the northeast (NHER 44897 and 44898). While parts of this other trackway are depicted on late 18th and 19th century maps, its relationship with a number of prehistoric funerary monuments in the area suggests it may have originated in an earlier period, possibly during the Iron Age. A similar date might be plausible for the site described here, but the general character of the crop and soilmarks suggests that again it remained in use until relatively recently. More minor banks and ditches visible at its northeast end may be contemporary features. At the same time, it should be noted that none of the mapped features is of certain archaeological origin; parts of the site may instead be the product of recent agricultural activity or of natural origin.

None of the features is visible as an earthwork on the most recent aerial photographs of the site (S3).
