Summary

Ditches and a pit, all of unknown date, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Some, at least, are likely to be associated with Boundary Farm, which lies immediately to the south. The latter is depicted on Faden’s 1797 Map of Norfolk, indicating that it dates back to at least the late 18th century. Whether any of the mapped features are associated with either of the two ring ditches visible in the area (NHER 18335 and 45087) is not known.

Map

October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Ditches and a pit are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 4043 1531. They are undated; some may be the product of recent agricultural activity, or have some other non-archaeological origin. A substantial rectilinear ditch visible on the southern edge of the site has a similar orientation to the surrounding field boundaries depicted on historic and modern maps. It seems likely that this was a boundary ditch of some kind, probably associated with Boundary Farm immediately to the south. (The latter is depicted on Faden’s Map of Norfolk (S3) and has therefore been in existence since at least the late 18th century). A rectilinear pit enclosed by the ditch, which has a similar orientation, is also likely to relate to activity at the farm. There is no evidence of a relationship between any of the features described here and the two ring ditches identified in the same field (NHER 18335 and 45087).
