Summary

A possible ring ditch, perhaps the site of a medieval or post medieval post mill, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. It consists of a rather irregularly shaped ring ditch with an external protrusion on its southern side. An elongated cross-shaped pit is visible within it. It might have been associated with the post medieval farm 200m to its southeast (Green Farm, NHER 37142), the origins of which could lie in the medieval period, or with the houses lining Fritton Lane to its west.

Map

October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A possible ring ditch is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 4045 1847. It is undated. The presence of a cross-shaped pit within it, however, together with its location close to the hamlet of Fritton, suggests that it could represent the site of a medieval and/or post medieval post mill. It is surrounded by the cropmarks of multi-period enclosures and field boundaries (NHER 45072) but there are no obvious relationships between the ring ditch and them. It should be noted that a pattern of geological cropmarks are visible across this area of ground and it is not entirely certain that the ring ditch is of archaeological rather than geological origin.

The ring ditch has a rather irregular oval shape in plan. It appears to consist of two segments of ditch; the southern/eastern ditch protrudes for some metres to the south, perhaps corresponding with a field boundary shown on the Tithe Map (S2). There are possible entrances on its northeast and south sides. The latter is partially defined by the protruding ditch but also appears to be blocked by two narrow ditches, perhaps indicating that it was an entrance for only a limited period of time. The ring ditch measures 15m long and 13m wide.
