Summary

Several ditches of unknown date are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. They form a rectilinear layout which is at odds with the 19th and 20th century field pattern, and they may represent an earlier pattern of enclosure. A late prehistoric, Iron Age to Roman date has been tentatively suggested for ditches to the west (NHER 44802), which share the same orientation.

Map

October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Ditches are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 4217 2001. Their rectilinear arrangement suggests that they may represent part of a former field system. Their orientation indicates that they probably pre-date the pattern of enclosure depicted on 19th and 20th century maps such as (S2). A later prehistoric, Iron Age to Roman date has been suggested for ditches with a similar orientation visible 250m to the west (NHER 44802). At the same time, it should be noted that the features are visible on only one set of aerial photographs, and that their archaeological origin is not certain.
