Full Description
October 2006. Norfolk NMP
Cropmarks of linear and curvilinear ditches, probably field boundaries or enclosures of unknown and possible medieval to post medieval date, are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). These cropmarks are centred on TM 3788 9198. A group of irregular curvilinear ditch cropmarks are present on a variety of different alignments. The majority of these do not correspond to the modern field pattern. Faden’s 1797 Map of Norfolk (S3) shows that they were located on the edge of Ellingham, Kirby and Geldeston Common. However, it is not clear whether they were actually located on the common itself. The cropmarks in the northwest part of the group may represent a series of small overlapping enclosures of medieval to post medieval date. The cropmarks are too incomplete for their form and dimensions to be certain. It is likely that the other linear and curvilinear ditches relate to field boundaries of medieval to post medieval date. Further field boundary and common-edge boundary cropmarks are present immediately to the west (NHER 45192).
