Summary

A windmill is shown at this location on the first edition six inch to the mile Ordnance Survey map and Bryant's 1826 county map. This is possibly the same mill that Faden's 1797 map shows located further to the west.

Map

October 2006.
A post medieval corn mill is shown to the south of Mill Road at TM 3695 9249 on the 1880s first edition six inch to the mile Ordnance Survey map (S1). Buildings are shown on the same plot of land on the 1840 Ellingham tithe map, but are not specifically labelled as a mill (S2). Bryant’s 1826 county map (S3) shows a windmill located slightly to the south of this site, immediately to the west of Mill Lane, although it is almost certainly the same mill. Considerable confusion has existed over the location of a windmill shown on Faden’s 1797 Map of Norfolk (S4). His map appears to show a mill located 350m further to the west on the edge of ‘Ellingham, Kirby and Geldeston Common’ (NHER 14687). It is probable that this is in fact also the same windmill and the location on Faden’s map is incorrect. The location shown on Bryant’s map and the Ordnance Survey map is supported by the road names ‘Mill Road’ to its north and ‘Mill Lane’ to its east. However, it is always possible that the windmill shown on the common-edge on Faden’s map in 1797 was correctly located and that it had been replaced by a new mill further to the east by 1826, meaning that both maps are correct. The mill tower was still standing, but apparently disused in 1945 (S5).
