NHER 45217 (Monument record) - Cropmarks of possible Iron Age or Roman enclosures and fields

These cropmarks were previously recorded under NHER 38750.

The cropmarks of a series of Iron Age or Roman date enclosures and fields are visible on aerial photographs to the northwest of Whinmere Farm, Hickling (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 3991 2500. These cropmarks are overlain by the ditches forming part of two separate field systems, both of probable medieval to post medieval date (NHER 11876 and 38750).

The site consists of group of co-axially arranged linear ditches and boundaries. These are all aligned either NE-SW or NW-SE. An L-shaped ditch running from TG 4001 2483 to TG 3991 2500 may represent part of a large rectilinear enclosure or field, centred on TG 3995 2491 and potentially measuring 115m by at least 175m. An arrangement of three ditches on the northeastern corner of this possible enclosure may suggest a multiple boundary or perhaps a trackway running around the outside of the enclosure. 50m to the north is another pair of ditches, running parallel to the enclosure or field, again this may represent a trackway. To the far north of the site is a possible rectilinear enclosure at TG 4007 2523,measuring 22m by 32m, although the cropmarks are not completely convincing.
