Summary

The cropmarks of a C-shaped ditch of possible prehistoric date are visible on aerial photographs in Hopton-on-Sea. It is possible that this is the partial remains of a small circular enclosure or ring ditch, perhaps relating a former Bronze Age round barrow site. The curvilinear ditch is located within an area of complex and overlapping enclosures and field boundaries, dating from the late prehistoric to the Roman period (NHER 43494-5, 43559). Another possible round barrow site is located to the immediate west (NHER 43557).

The cropmarks of a C-shaped ditch of possible prehistoric date are visible on aerial photographs in Hopton-on-Sea (S1). It is possible that this is the partial remains of a small circular enclosure or ring ditch, perhaps relating a former Bronze Age round barrow site. The site is centred on TG 5211 0122 and is located within an area of complex and overlapping enclosures and field boundaries, dating from the late prehistoric to the Roman period (NHER 43494-5, 43559). Another possible round barrow site is located to the immediate west (NHER 43557).

The C-shaped ditch is 38m across at the open eastern end. The cropmarks are quite faint and only visible in summer 1976 (S1). The ditch is either overlain by or overlies the curvilinear trackway (NHER 43501), which is also thought to be of potential prehistoric date.
