Summary

The cropmarks of a possible late prehistoric farmstead or dwelling and field system are visible on aerial photographs in Hopton-on-Sea. The cropmarks are located to the immediate south of a late prehistoric field system and possible settlement (NHER 43496). These northern features would appear to represent a different phase of activity as some of the cropmarks either overlie or cut by these ditches and also follow a different alignment.

Map

September 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a possible late prehistoric farmstead or dwelling and field system are visible on aerial photographs in Hopton-on-Sea (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 5299 0019.
The cropmarks are located to the immediate south of a late prehistoric field system and possible settlement, suggested by the cropmarks of a possible round house (NHER 43496). These northern features would appear to represent a different phase of activity as some of the cropmarks either overlie or cut by these ditches and also follow a different alignment. Excavation would have been needed to reveal the chronological relationship. The site of these cropmarks, visible in the 1940s, has since been developed and housing, Julian Way, and a caravan park are now located on the site.

At TG 5298 0023 is a rectangular enclosure, measuring 18m by 14m, is visible (S1). Although the cropmarks are quite fragmentary it is appears that this enclosure may be located within the corner of a larger rectilinear enclosure, measuring 45m across by at least 33m. It is possible that this enclosure represents a domestic area and may represent a small farmstead. To the west and south of this enclosure are a variety of ditched boundaries and double ditched linears. These are likely to represent fields and trackway associated with the enclosure
