Full Description
September 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a rectangular enclosure of unknown, but possibly of Iron Age to Roman date, are visible on aerial photographs. (S1). The site is centred on TG 5280 0211. The rectangular shape and rounded corners of the enclosure could easily indicate an Iron Age to Roman date. The enclosure shows no obvious relationship with the regular Roman fields to the immediate west (NHER 43495) and it is follows a noticeably different alignment. The enclosure does follow the same dominant alignment as the late prehistoric to Iron Age settlement (NHER 43494), although it is quite far removed from the main area of enclosures, approximately 600m to the southwest.
The enclosure measures 67m by 55m externally, with a relatively broad ditch, ranging from 1.5m by 4.5m. A narrow ditch is also visible to the south of the enclosure may represent a continuation of the enclosure ditch, although it is remarkably thinner than the rest of the enclosure is it is not certain whether it is definite associated.
