Summary

The cropmarks of a ring ditch, probably the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Hobland Plantation, Gorleston on Sea. A pit within the centre of the ring is likely to be the remains of grave pit. A similarly sized ring ditch and circular mound 280m to the north (NHER 45054) are also likely to represent round barrows. Other ring ditches and round barrow sites are located nearby (NHER 12779, 43551-3).

Map

April 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a ring ditch, probably the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Hobland Plantation, Gorleston on Sea. The site is centred on TG 5153 0183.
The ring ditch is elliptical, measuring 11.5m by 9.5m. Two breaks are visible in the ring. A pit, 3m by 2m, is located in the northeastern quadrant of the circle. The cropmarks are quite faint and are located in the far ground of an oblique aerial photograph.

February-March 2010. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of underground electrical cables.
A cable trench excavated to the south of the ambulance station passed through the site of this ring-ditch but although several features were recorded in this area it is uncertain which, if any, corresponded with the cropmarks. Whilst a narrow north-east to south-west aligned ditch was recorded on or close to the mapped location of the ring-ditch it is suggested that a pair of slightly curvi-linear ditches exposed approximately 10m to the south are more likely to have been associated with this cropmark feature. It is noted that the distance between these two more substantial ditches was very similar to the recorded diameter of the ring-ditch. Unfortunately no finds were recovered from any of these features.
See report (S2) and NHER 57862 for further details.
