Summary

The cropmarks of possible late prehistoric to Roman date enclosures are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Hobland Manor, Hopton on Sea. A small ring ditch located within this site may be the remains of a round house or agricultural structure. This possible enclosure and associated boundaries are aligned in roughly the same direction as the large late prehistoric to Iron Age settlement and field system to the east (NHER 43494) and it is possible that it is part of the same phase of enclosure.

Map

October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of possible late prehistoric to Roman date enclosures are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Hobland Manor, Hopton on Sea (S1-S3). The site is centred on TG 5158 0129. A number of Roman finds have been found to the west of these cropmarks (NHER 11551).

The site consists of a series of ditches aligned either NW-SE or NE-SW and are likely to represent the fragmentary remains of fields and possible enclosure ditches. To the west of the site is an L-shaped section of double ditched, which may be defining the corner of a rectilinear enclosure, possibly 100m by 75m. A ring ditch is located within this possible enclosure, at TG 5148 0133, and is 5.5m in diameter. Given the location this is likely to be the remains of prehistoric or Roman date round house or agricultural structure. A similarly sized ring ditch is located to the immediate west (NHER 45162).
