Full Description
September 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of undated enclosures and field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs in Hopton-on-Sea (S1). The site is centred on TG 5233 0108, although this point does not correspond to a part of this site on the ground. These cropmarks are located within an area of complex and overlapping enclosures and field boundaries, dating from the late prehistoric to the Roman period (NHER 43494-5).
The cropmarks recorded under this site do not appear to form part of the other phases. For other undated cropmarks recorded within this area see NHER 45203. Although some elements of this site do have shared alignments with the late prehistoric settlement (NHER 43494) and it is therefore possible that these fields and enclosures are later developments in the chronological sequence. Excavation is required to reveal the chronological sequence of the cropmarks in this area.
The clearest component of this site is an incomplete polygonal enclosure centred on TG 5237 0098, measuring 47m by at least 62m. The enclosure has rounded corners and narrows slightly to the south, although this section of the site is not visible. The enclosure appears to have two opposed entrances, both 6-7m wide. To the north is a series of similarly aligned ditched boundaries, 50-60m apart, and these may represent fragments of a contemporary field system.
