Full Description
June 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of field boundaries of probable post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs to the immediate west of Rose Farm, Potter Heigham (S1). The site is centred on TG 4092 2013 and consists of two intersecting ditches, 1m to 2m wide, aligned north to south and east to west. The ditches are broadly aligned the same as the post medieval fields associated with Rose Farm. It is therefore possible that they are post medieval in date, but have been removed by the surveying of the 1840 Potter Heigham Tithe map (S2). These cropmarks are also located within a larger area of undated and multiphase cropmarks (NHER 43791), many of which may be late prehistoric to Roman in date. It is worth noting that a north to south running ditch containing Roman pottery was excavated nearby as part of the Bacton to Great Yarmouth pipeline (NHER 43000). Although there is no obvious relationship between the two sites, other than shared alignment.
S. Massey (NMP), 12 June 2006.
