Summary

A probable building platform or yard surface of post medieval date, together with associated pits and boundaries, is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The features almost certainly relate, and in some cases correspond, to an enclosed group of buildings depicted on Honing Tithe Map (1841). A later Ordnance Survey map indicates that these had been removed by the early 20th century.

Map

November 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A large, rectilinear negative cropmark, and also a number of other nearby cropmark features, are visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 3150 2918. The negative cropmark probably represents a building platform, yard surface or similar positive feature, almost certainly associated with the cluster of buildings depicted immediately to its northeast on Honing Tithe Map (S4). A right-angled boundary bank equates to a boundary on the map, as may part of a linear ditch. The origin of three large pit-like cropmarks to the north is uncertain, but they are presumably associated features. They may represent agricultural pits of some kind, or possibly animal pens or shelters where the ground has been trampled. The Ordnance Survey 2nd edition 25 inch map (S5) demonstrates that the buildings on the Tithe Map had been removed by the early 20th century. Other cropmarks visible in the surrounding area appear to be the product of drainage, recent agricultural activity and geology, and consequently have not been mapped by the NMP.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 28 November 2006.
