Full Description
October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
A group of earthwork terraces and embankments are visible on Hunting Survey photographs from 1969 (S1) and BKS vertical aerial photographs from 1988 (S2) on the lower slopes of Stiffkey river valley at Home Hill. These features are likely to be medieval to post medieval in date and relate to a series of possibly terraced fields. Traces of similar features have been identified on the ground to the east, see NHER 32793 for details. These slight earthworks are still visible in low light on this cultivated land in 1969. The clearest features are two raised linears, running from TF 9665 4320 to TF 9664 4312 and another from TF 9678 4318 to TF 9674 4310. This linear may be a continuation of the wide raised causeway recorded to the north under NHER 32793. This is known to have been used as a sheep drove. At TF 9674 4310 this linear widens out into a roughly square platform, approximately 80m across. To the immediate east of this is another, smaller platform, approximately 45m square. Another possible raised platform may be visible between the two linears, centred on TF 9670 4316, measuring 83m by 62m and is oblong in shape. Many of these are raised and appear to be defined in places by ditches, although in some cases it may be the shadow created by platforms giving this impression. These raised platforms may be terraced into the slope, rather than being actual mounds and these may be a series of former fields.
