Full Description
October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
A series of large post medieval drainage channel and banks are visible on aerial photographs on the saltmarsh. These features are to the immediate east of saltmarsh channel and it is possible that they relate to an earlier, perhaps artificial route of the creek. All of these banks and ditches are likely to post medieval in date.
A linear ditch runs from TF 9733 4406 to TF 9764 4419 and measures 340m long and up to 5m wide. The ditch appears to represent the straightening and maintenance of a natural saltmarsh creek. Two narrower ditches, running from TF 9776 4423 to TF 9783 4426 and from TF 987 4427 to TF 9796 4430, appear to be a continuation of this feature. These both have banks to the south, up to 7m wide. To the northwest of this channel is a bank running from TF 9731 4420 to TF 9732 4413, measuring 68m by 6m. This appears to be alongside the eastern side of the channel, which may suggest that this part of the creek has also been altered. However it could be a flood defence for the area of marsh to the east. To the east is another set of banks and ditches running almost north to south from TF 9797 4438 to TF 9799 425. The longest (western) bank is 115m long and 6m. The second ditch is 8m to the east and is approximately 70m long. The land between the two earthworks appears to be slightly hollowed or sunken.
