Summary

Cropmarks of linear and curvilinear ditches, mainly of unknown date but clearly from several different periods, are visible on aerial photographs. At least some are likely to be drainage ditches and field boundaries dating to the post medieval period.

Map

November 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Linear and curvilinear ditches are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1) to (S5), centred at TG 3074 2962. Their date is generally not known, but the variety of alignments and characteristics present indicates that more than one phase of activity is represented. Some elements may be relatively early; one ditch appears to respect the site of a probable Bronze Age round barrow (NHER 16733), showing that the latter must still have survived as an earthwork when the ditch was laid out. Others may be associated with the possible palaeochannel visible as a cropmark to the north of Happisburgh Road (but not mapped by the NMP), and could even be of natural origin themselves. Those at the southwest corner of the site, close to Crickmore Farmhouse and Field Cottages, seem to relate to field boundaries depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 6 inch map (S6). Some of the features mapped at the north end of the site correspond with boundaries on North Walsham Tithe Map (S7) and are probably drainage features.

It should be noted that the oblique photographs of the site (S3) to (S5) were difficult to rectify, and that consequently the NMP mapping may be less accurate than usual.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 28 November 2006.
