Summary

The cropmarks of a post medieval date road or trackway are visible on aerial photographs running from Wheatcroft Farm towards Hobland Plantation and the former edge of Gorleston common. A similar linear cropmark runs towards this point on the parish boundary from the southwest (NHER 45152). Both of these roads or trackways are marked on the 1797 Faden map. This road appears to be overlain by part of a post medieval field system (NHER 45056). The alignment of this track is continued by another trackway on the southeastern edge of the common (NHER 45157).

Map

October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a post medieval date road or trackway are visible on aerial photographs running from Wheatcroft Farm towards Hobland Plantation and the former edge of Gorleston common (S1-S3). The site is centred on TG 5087 0235. A similar linear cropmark runs towards this point on the parish boundary from the southwest (NHER 45152). Both of these roads or trackways are marked on the 1797 Faden map (S3) and the 1783 Hodskinson map (S4). This road appears to be overlain by part of a post medieval field system (NHER 45056).

Running from TG 5048 0247 to TG 5078 0236 is an intermittent double ditched linear, with an internal bank or more likely a compacted surface, up to 8m wide (S1). The continuation of this linear feature to the southeast, towards Hobland Plantation, may be visible as a faint light crop and soilmark in 1951 (S2). Another possibly branching of this track may be suggested to the north, towards Wheatcroft Farm, by a slight earthwork and cropmark (S3).

This trackway or road led to the northwestern edge of Gorleston common (S4-S5). The alignment of this track is continued by another trackway on the southeastern edge of the common (NHER 45157) and a section of ditch between the two features (NHER 45156) may indicate a connecting segment of track.
