Summary

A World War Two military camp is visible on aerial photographs. It is likely that this camp was associated with a searchlight battery located 170m to its west on Horning recreation ground (NHER 45260). A second camp, possibly also related to the battery was located 580m to the southeast on Lower Street (NHER 45258). Additional buildings had been added to the camp between July 1946 and November 1950, possibly and the camp may have been used to provide accommodation for bombed-out civilians.

Map

November 2006. Norfolk NMP
A World War Two military camp is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). This camp was located at TG 3434 1736. Seven rectangular pitched-roofed huts were present along with a number of smaller buildings. A water tower was located on the south side of the site and an open rectangular structure, possibly a static water tank, was positioned in amongst the huts. It is likely that this camp was associated with a searchlight battery located 170m to its west on Horning recreation ground (NHER 45260). A second camp, possibly also related to the battery was located 580m to the southeast on Lower Street (NHER 45258). Additional buildings had been added to the camp between July 1946 (S1) and November 1950 (S2), although these were not mapped. It appears to have remained in use after World War Two, possibly as accommodation for bombed-out civilians. All structures at the camp had been completely demolished by March 1954 (S3).
