Summary

Cropmarks of a ring ditch and rectangular enclosure of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs. It is possible that the ring ditch is of Bronze Age date and that it relates to a round barrow. Alternatively it could relate to an Iron Age to Roman round house. The rectangular enclosure cropmark could be the foundation trench of a building or structure of unknown date.

Map

November 2006. Norfolk NMP
Cropmarks of a ring ditch and rectangular enclosure of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These cropmarks are centred on TG 3311 1872. An incomplete ring ditch cropmark is present. It is sub-circular in plan with a narrow ditch and an external diameter of 16m. The ditch cropmark on its southwest side is obscured by an area of different soil type creating a apparent 10m wide gap in the ring ditch. The date and function of this ring ditch is not certain. It is possible that it is of Bronze Age date and that it relates to a round barrow. Alternatively it could relate to a roundhouse of Iron Age to early Roman date.

Located 15m to the southeast of the ring ditch are cropmarks of a rectangular enclosure. This enclosure lies on a north to south axis and measures 15m by 10m internally and has a possible entrance on its east side. It is possible that this cropmark relates to small enclosure or the foundation of a rectangular building. However, its simple form makes it impossible to date accurately from its plan alone. The alignment of this enclosure is similar to that of undated, but possibly Roman, enclosures and field boundaries present to its south (NHER 45272-3). The alignment of the enclosure does not correspond to that of the modern field pattern or the farm buildings at Leys Farm immediately to its north.
