Map

November 2006. Norfolk NMP
Cropmarks of a post medieval road or track are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These cropmarks are centred on TG 3149 1838. Two linear ditch cropmarks are present on a parallel southwest to northeast alignment between TG 3144 1834 and TG 3154 1841. The ditches are spaced 7.5m apart and correspond to a road marked on the 1828 Hoveton St John enclosure map (S2). Although not visible as cropmarks the road continued to the north, following a field boundary to TG 3164 1875. To the southwest of the cropmarks the road appears to have originally passed to the northeast of St Benets House before joining the modern line of Horning Road at TG 3129 1822. However, the section to the northeast of St Benets House is not marked on the enclosure map (S2) and surprisingly no part of this road is shown on Faden’s 1797 map (S3). It is possible that this road was constructed after the surveying for Faden’s map or that it was for some reason omitted from this map and has an earlier post medieval or medieval origin.
