Summary

The cropmarks of a ring ditch, probably the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Cherry Lane, Belton with Browston. This ring ditch is located within an area of complex cropmarks, see NHER 45213 for details. Another possible ring ditch is located to the immediate west (NHER 45211). Trial trenching in 2017 confirmed the presence of a surviving sub-surface feature associated with this cropmark, although unfortunately no clear dating evidence was recovered.

Map

October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a ring ditch, probably the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Cherry Lane, Belton with Browston (S1-S2). The ring ditch is centred on TG 4965 0188 and is 11m in diameter. This ring ditch is located within an area of complex cropmarks, see NHER 45213 for details. Another possible ring ditch is located to the immediate west (NHER 45211). Both of these possible barrows are located to the east of a section of trackway of probable late prehistoric date (NHER 45178) that may form part of a wider network of trackways further to the east (43544). These barrows are located just above the 10m contour and overlook a minor branch of the Fritton valley to the south. To the east another group of barrows also overlook the valley (NHER 17225, 45168-72). The trackway system (43544 and 45178) appears to be sited alongside these barrows. Another group of round barrows (NHER 12777, 13432, 45207-8) is located to the north on the slightly higher ground above the valley.
S. Massey (NMP), 30 October 2006.

November-December 2017. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site adjacent to Cherry Lane.
One of the trenches exposed a section of a ring-ditch that almost certainly corresponds with this cropmark feature, although it appears that it was encountered several meters to the north of its mapped location. The ditch was between 1.1m and 1.29m wide and survived to a depth of up to 0.62m. Although the exposed section of ring-ditch was almost fully excavated finds were limited to a single prehistoric flint flake and a fragment of modern glass, the latter recovered from what appeared to be an area of fairly recent root disturbance.
See report (S3) and NHER 62658 for further details.
