Full Description
October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a possible ring ditch, potentially the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, may be visible on aerial photographs to the south of the intersection of the Beccles Road and New Road (S1). The ring ditch is centred on TG 4988 0305. Other ring ditches and round barrows are located nearby (NHER 12777, 13432, 45207-8, 45210). This possible barrow is located just above the 10m contour overlooking a tributary valley of the Waveney, Belton Fen. This ring ditch is also located within an area of complex cropmarks, see NHER 45216 for an overview, including possible late prehistoric enclosures and fields (NHER 45215).
The cropmarks are quite faint and are located on the far ground on the aerial photographs (S1). The ring is also not visible on any other photographs, including vertical coverage of the area. However the ring is reasonably convincing and measures 13m in diameter.
S. Massey (NMP), 30 October 2006.
