Full Description
October 2006. Systematic Fieldwalking and Metal-detecting Survey.
Field survey on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Field 35).
The finds recovered included:
2 prehistoric pottery sherds and 60 worked flints.
7 ?prehistoric burnt flints.
2 ?Roman pottery sherds and at least 1 ceramic building material fragment.
5 medieval pottery sherds, 1 purse frame fitting, 1?buckle plate, 1 ?hooked tag and 1 copper alloy vessel foot.
1 ?medieval lead token and 1 cloth seal.
1 medieval/post-medieval lace tag.
8 post-medieval coins, 1 coin/token, 2 clay tobacco pipe fragments, 5+ ceramic building material fragments, 4 buttons, 1 military stock clasp, 1 military lapel badge, 1 finial, 5 buckles (2 pewter), 2 mounts, 1 spoon, 2 thimbles, 1 hook fragment, 1 copper alloy nail, 1 copper alloy trade weight, 1 copper alloy apothecary weight, 1 copper alloy moulded ring, 3 copper alloy finger rings, 1 lead plumb bob and 4 lead toys.
1 post-medieval/modern handle back plate.
3 undatable fragments of metal-working debris, 1 ?watch winder, 1 ferrule, 1 copper alloy pin, 1 copper alloy plate, 1 lead nail/rivet, 1 lead plumb bob, 2 lead weights, 3 lead disc heads/mounts, 1 lead ?weight and various other undiagnostic copper alloy and lead objects.
The area examined lies close to the recorded site of St Faith's Fairstead (NHER 8126), which presumably explains the notable concentration of medieval to post-medieval finds, many of which are typical of the types of artefact that might be found at such a site. The densest cluster of artefacts apparently coincided with the highest part of the field.
It was however also noted that the greater number of finds recovered at this site is likely to be at least partially the result of the more intensive survey methodology that was employed at this location due to its known significance.
