Summary

The cropmarks of an enclosure of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Market Road, Burgh Castle. The enclosure is roughly square or sub-rectangular and is bisected by a post medieval field boundary. The date of this enclosure is not known and it could be late prehistoric or Roman in date. However it does share a similar alignment to the enclosure surrounding a medieval post mill to the immediate northwest (NHER 42472) and this may indicate a later date.

Map

October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of an enclosure of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Market Road, Burgh Castle (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 4962 0492.

The enclosure is centred on TG 4963 0491 and would have been approximately 45m across. The ditches on the western side appear to be up to 2m wide. It is possible that the western side of this enclosure overlies a series of ditches relating an earlier, possibly late prehistoric or Roman date enclosure (NHER 45230), although this relationship is not certain from the cropmarks.
