Full Description
October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks of a small group of possible late Saxon to medieval date saltern mounds or the remains of a medieval marsh farm are visible on aerial photographs at Seven Mile House. ((S1)-(S3)). The site is centred on TG 4572 0153. These mounds are located alongside the River Waveney and within the area of the former tidal estuary. It is possible that these represent mounds of salt production waste, which may have been fed by tidal waters inundating the river prior to the silting up of the estuary mouth or perhaps by a tidal creek on the marsh. An alternative explanation is that the mounds, which are located next to a track at Seven Mile House, are the site of a former marsh farm or building associated with river traffic.
The site consists of an oval mound (S1), 50m by up to 25m. On top of the southern end is another mound, oblong in shape and 22m by 7m (S2). This oblong is quite clearly defined and appears to represent a separately phase of either salt production waste or perhaps the remains of a rectangular structure which has been placed on top of the larger oval mound. This may be the remains of a former marsh farm or similar structure. A bank is also visible to the west of the mound. It is not clear whether this is related to the mounds, although it is possible.
